James E. Whittle, Jr. was born and reared in Gloverville, South Carolina. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1979; U.S. District Court in 1980; U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, in 1989; and U.S. Supreme Court in 1991.
